I once heard a youth speaker say, “Scripture says your body is a temple, so yeah, I work out a lot.” He only got worse from there.
“Marcionite” is probably an unfair term to call people who cherry-pick scripture to justify their pre-conceived notions or make the Bible easier to fit their lifestyle. Marcion was an early Christian (85-160AD) who loved the God of Jesus but rejected the Old Testament and any portions of the NT that didn’t fit what he thought God was supposed to be like. The Bible gives us such a complicated God that we all tend to be a little Marcion at times, ignoring or smoothing over the parts we don’t like to make it work for us.
P.S. I really don’t think John Wesley would have been a good youth minister, which is why I have him being so grumpy with kids this week. I would never say these things to real kids. That’s what I have this comic for.
