Social activism is in the roots of the Wesleyan movement. John Wesley popularized tracts promoting the abolition of the slave trade, and he spoke up and acted for the sake of those in need. Works of Mercy are the means of grace where we love our neighbors as we love ourselves. It takes a lot to make a difference today, and many of us are satisfied to keep our works of mercy to little tidbits that make us feel like we’ve made the world a better place. This comic came out of reading about the downfall of awareness group Invisible Children, which inspired all of us to be mad about Kony’s army of children in Uganda, but then fell short of figuring out what to do about it. Apparently, making us all aware isn’t enough. The truth is, it takes commitment and building relationships and partnerships to really make justice happen in the world. I feel like no Star Trek spoof is worthwhile without a stab at Wesley Crusher. I figured I’d just make him more a typical teenager than the perfect goody-boy he was on the show. And then as soon as the going gets tough on his selfie stick, he’s ready to beam out…well, most of us are the same way, right? I wish I could have made the Orion women green like they are in the series, feel like that would have made it more obvious. Although, I’m pretty pleased with Keenser in the last panel, the Grumpy Cat of the future.
