Merry Christmas, friends of Wesley! As you celebrate the birth of Christ, pause in the wonder and mystery of the Infinite Word who made his home among us so that we can make our home with God. We search the scriptures for a glimpse of God’s truth. We use our reason to test tradition and experience that we may hold onto what is good. We practice the means of grace, loving God and loving neighbor the way Christ taught us. And yet all of our works, all of our powers to understand or put into words fall ever short of the fullness of God’s love for us in Christ Jesus. As our Soul Check and Pragmatic Four companions get crushed in their battle with Athanosius, they find all that remains is doxology.
What does it mean to you that God put on flesh and made this world home? How do you process an Infinite Creator choosing to be born in an obscure family in a nowhere town? Is it just a nice children’s story? Is it a sentimental pageant or a reality-altering event in history too big to capture with doctrine or ethics or philosophy or religion?
I wish you the very best Christmas Day, and in the days to come, may you find room to welcome Christ with new eyes.
