“If you set yourself on fire, people will come for miles to watch you burn.” I know that’s supposed to be motivational, but it sounds more like a trainwreck that you just can’t NOT look at. Anyway, John Wesley never said it, even though multiple variations of this phrase have been attributed to him. Perhaps someone said it about Wesley, who considered himself “a brand plucked from the burning.” In any case, masochistic or motivational, people WILL notice if you live your life differently. I struggle with this concept in ministry…I don’t see a lot of passion, a lot of people “on fire for Christ,” so to speak. I feel a lot like John in the comic above, putting someone into the giant tire of worship or study or outreach, push them down the hill and hope they have an amazing ride that leads to transformation.
